Three stone houses round one hearth on the Orkney cliffs, nine rooms and a sauna on the shore. A concept hotel site built to win direct bookings, illustrated in a coloured-pencil style from the site plan to every room.
Visit the live concept site ↗Small hotels lose a large share of every booking to travel agencies. The site had to make booking direct the obvious choice, and give a sense of the place: weather, tide, stone, light, peat smoke.
The idea came from Orkney’s first villages, stone houses built round a central hearth and joined by covered passages. I named the three houses Stane, Banks and Haar, for rock, cliff and sea fog, and wrote the copy like a keeper’s logbook.
Colours come from peat, sea fog and thrift. The type pairs Cormorant Unicase, which recalls carved Norse and Pictish lettering, with EB Garamond and a small mono for tide times and room data.
I planned the site in Relume and built it in Webflow: Rooms, Eat, The Island, Journal and Book, with CMS collections for rooms, island places, dishes and journal entries.
The brief I gave myself: Orkney as if Tadao Ando had drawn it by hand, with the same economy of line and hatched walls, in coloured pencil on warm paper.
The technical drawings, from the site plan and sections to all nine rooms, were made with AI and code under my art direction. I set the style and references, built and refined each sheet with Claude Code, and kept going until the set read as one hand.
A complete concept site in which almost every image is a drawing. Every page ends with a quiet “Book direct”.

The homepage first ran an older version of the 3D animation, shown first below. After it come layout prototypes made from the design notes before the final build. The live site went another way, so these were set aside. They are kept here as part of the process.

This old image belongs to the old version of the 3D animation on the Skerry House homepage. The animation has since been rebuilt.
